Drivers on the Road of Hackney Streets in 1980's

Chris Dorley-Brown, a famous photographer whose art exhibits were mostly about the life on every streets of Hackney, London. One morning of May 1987, as an expert and popular person in the world of photography, Dorley-Brown was sent to document the sell-off of the car company Rolls-Royce. The event was held in the same city he was in. While on his way to document the big sell-off, several different things have captivated his attention, and as a result, capturing those moments on the streets rose to an idea that he couldn’t even believe would took almost three decades to be completed, the book “Driver in the 1980s”. To such formidable work, whatever reward he may gain, I would say that, “He’s worth it!”.

“I set out that day to make some photographs of the Rolls Royce shares sell off, and along the way, as I walked to the city, the people in the traffic jam captured my attention,” Dorley-Brown says of the portraits in the book, which is titled Drivers in the 1980s and is published by Hoxton Mini Press. “Hackney was a fascinating place in the 1980s; a bit old-fashioned but full of a wonderful mixture of people who seemed to get on very well with each other…. It was the perfect place to photograph if you were interested in ‘social documentary’.”

The photos that Chris Dorley-Brown took in Hackney streets has proved his expertise on photography, not only in ‘social documentation but also on other aspects of the profession. Interest was not the only key to Dorley-Brown’s successful achievements, it was also teamed up with inspiration.
