The Rothschilds were not only known as the wealthiest and the most powerful family in the world, back in the days they were also known for throwing killer parties with A guest lists and wicked themes.
However, the one percent knew how to keep their decadent soirees private, since only a few parties have been documented in pictures.
One of those parties was the “Surrealist Ball” at the Château de Ferrières in December 1972 with Marie-Hélène de Rothschild and Baron Guy De Rothschild as hosts.
The invitations were written backwards, forcing the guests to use the assistance of a mirror to read them. The distinguished guests including Salvador Dali and Audrey Hepburn were asked to wear “black tie, long dresses and surrealists heads”.
Upon arrival, the facade of the chateau was lit in red with the effect of making it appear to be on fire. The guests had to walk through black ribbons that were meant to mimic cobwebs and a labyrinth maze before entering the ballroom.
