The catastrophic disaster that happened at the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant back in 1986 left a huge mark all over Europe and in the western Part of the former USSR.
The worst effects of radiation, of course, were felt in the area surrounding the Nuclear Power Plant. The area known as “Chernobyl exclusion zone”, or simply, “The zone”. The Exclusion Zone covers an area of approximately 2,600 square km (1,000 square miles) in Ukraine immediately surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant where radioactive contamination from fallout is highest and public access and inhabitation are restricted.
Today, The Zone attracts a lot of scientists, scavengers, as well as tourists. One such person is a girl only known as Bionerd23. For the last 2 years, she is visiting the town of Pripyat, the nuclear plant and the surrounding villages and forest, making astonishing videos from locations with extremely high levels of radiation. You can check those on her Youtube channel.
It seems that nothing can stop this girl. On the videos, you can often see her exposed to lethal levels of radiation, grabbing radioactive material with nothing more than some rubber gloves on her hands and even eating fruits from The Zone! The videos are not just plain landscapes, she also gives some scientific insight in matters of radiation.
The fact that she quotes Marie Curie seems really appropriate:
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood.”
Bionerd23 is not only trying to show the negative effects of radiation and the devastation caused by it. She is also trying to show the beauty and the wildlife of the area that nature reclaimed after being free from people for 30 years. These visual guides of The Zone are really worth seeing.
