An oil-spattered slice of movie history is up for auction, with not one, not two, but 13 vehicles used in Mad Max: Fury Road going under the hammer. It’s an unlucky number for some, but perfect for fans of the long-running franchise.
Mad Max has been going since 1979, with Fury Road released in 2015. Tom Hardy took over the title role from Mel Gibson, while Charlize Theron co-starred as Furiosa.
Do you fancy owning cars driven by Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron…?
Lloyds Classic Car Auctions are throwing open their Australian sale to the world. The online auction event takes place on the weekend of September 25th – 26th.
They describe it as their most iconic collection to date, adding: “the machines that outran the end of civilisation have been unearthed”.
Details of how the post-apocalyptic petrol machines were recovered aren’t clear. Lloyds mention that they are part of “the greatest barn-find ever recorded.”
If you’re in the Land Down Under you can take a trip to see the ferocious fleet for yourself. The Daily Mail writes that “The vehicles will be available Australia-wide for purchase and inspection times for the cars can be made via appointment.”
Hell on wheels under the hammer
Mad Max fans will instantly recognize Furiosa’s 6 wheel-drive War Rig. As reported by Insider, the epic gas guzzler has twin V8 engines and 18 wheels in total!
The Doof Wagon was villain Immortan Joe’s traveling entertainment center. It was on this 8 x 8 M.A.N former missile carrier that Coma-Doof Warrior played his flame-spewing electric guitar.
And one car that will get bidders hot under the bonnet is Max’s Ford Falcon XB Interceptor. Insider calls it Mr. Rockatansky’s “wasteland chariot Razor Cola.” This isn’t the original Interceptor – that one’s been restored and has its own sale taking place over in the States.
Other frightening fuel-eaters from the flick include the Gigahorse, Sabre Tooth, Jag Flamer, and Elvis. The last one packs a V12 engine onto a modified 3-window coupe. Why is it named Elvis? We’re not sure but this thing certainly rocks and rolls.
There reportedly isn’t a base price for the auction. It’ll probably take more than a few liters of oil and a much-sought-after tin of baked beans to complete the purchase.
The iconic Mad Max franchise
Originally a low-budget movie about screeching cars and lawless roads, Mad Max was the brainchild of director George Miller and co. Shooting in run-down settings was cheaper, so the story was given a sci-fi setting.
Miller, a doctor, famously drove ambulances to help raise funds for the project. The human carnage was influenced by his real-life medical experiences.
Introducing global audiences to Mel Gibson, it went on to spawn three sequels. The Road Warrior (1981) came first and is Gibson’s favorite. Beyond Thunderdome (1985) cast Tina Turner as Auntie Entity, though production was troubled.
Miller may have thought he’d seen the last of Max Rockatansky. However, a fourth installment was eventually made, with Tom Hardy as Max. Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa drew a lot of attention, with even Hardy considering her the star of the film.
Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth will star in the new movie
In fact, she will be the focus of latest chapter, Furiosa. Miller is directing the prequel, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing the title role. Mel Gibson is reportedly involved in the project.
Speaking in a Variety interview, Taylor-Joy revealed: “The thing that makes me most excited about Furiosa is, No. 1, George Miller. That brain is incredible.”
