Golden Oldies: The Oldest Celebrities in the World

If there’s one thing that’s constant in this ever-changing world, it’s these iconic celebrities. They’ve been around for as long as we can remember, and we can’t imagine Hollywood without them. Here, we take a look at the careers of some of the oldest celebrities and examine the brilliant contributions they’ve made over the decades.

Eva Marie Saint – 100 years old

Eva Marie Saint is one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema, and she’s the oldest living Academy Award winner. She was born on July 4, 1924, and began her career in television and radio in the late 1940s.

Her most notable role came in 1954’s On the Waterfront, in which she starred opposite Marlon Brando. Saint’s performance in this film earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 27th Academy Awards. She also starred in Alfred Hitchcock‘s North by Northwest (1959) with Carey Grant and James Mason.

Saint celebrated her 100th birthday in 2024, marking a significant milestone for any person, let alone a celebrity!

Jimmy Carter – 100 years old

Although technically not a celebrity, Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, is known throughout the world. Born on October 1, 1924, Carter remained active in public life up until recently, enjoying hobbies that included painting, woodworking and winemaking.

In February 2023, the Carter Center, the not-for-profit organization he founded in 1982, revealed that “after a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.”

At present, he’s enjoying visits with family, with his grandson, Josh, telling the media that “it’s clear we’re in the final chapter.”

Dick Van Dyke – 98 years old

In an amazing career spanning seven decades, actor and comedian Dick Van Dyke has made his mark in film, television and stage.

From beloved movies like Mary Poppins (1964) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), to TV shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-66) and The Carol Burnett Show (1967-78), Van Dyke has proven himself a legend. In fact, he’s actually received a Disney Legends Award, as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Today, Van Dyke is frequently spotted out and about, helping out those less fortunate. He also recently revealed how he stays fit, saying he works out three times a week, in order to keep his muscles flexible.

June Lockhart – 99 years old

June Lockhart was born on June 25, 1925, and is best known for playing mother roles in the 1950s and ’60s. She played Ruth Martin, the mother of Timmy, in Lassie (1954-73), and Dr. Maureen Robinson in Lost in Space (1965-68).

Lockhart made a cameo appearance in the 1998 film adaptation of Lost in Space, which was based on the original television series.

David Attenborough – 98 years old

While he may not be a Hollywood star, David Attenborough is still a star in our eyes, as he has made quite the name for himself in the world of natural science and exploration. He was born on May 8, 1926, and as a child was always fascinated with nature.

After attending university and earning a degree in natural sciences, he turned this fascination into a career spanning over 70 years. Rightfully so, Attenborough was knighted in 1985 by Queen Elizabeth II.

Attenborough has become the quintessential face and voice of nature documentaries, personally going on explorations around the world to provide detailed information to audiences interested in the science of nature.

Carol Burnett – 91 years old

Carol Burnett is a trailblazing actress and comedian, best known for The Carol Burnett Show, which ran from 1967-78. The series was groundbreaking and set the standard for sketch comedy. Over her decades-long career, Burnett’s won multiple Emmy Awards and become a beloved figure in television history.

Beyond her iconic show, she’s appeared in numerous movies and TV specials, showcasing her talent for both comedy and drama. Her legacy includes inspiring generations of comedians with her sharp wit, unforgettable characters and heartfelt performances.

Yoko Ono – 91 years old

While she may not be a Hollywood celebrity, Yoko Ono is still world famous. She’s an artist and musician who gained widespread attention as the wife of John Lennon from the Beatles.

Beyond her association with Lennon and the band, Ono is recognized as an influential figure in the avant-garde art world, known for her conceptual and performance art. Her music and activism have left a lasting impact, promoting messages of peace and love. Her work has been showcased in galleries and museums around the world, cementing her place as a pioneering artist.

Michael Caine – 91 years old

Michael Caine is a legendary and celebrated British actor who’s starred in over 160 films across his seven-decade career. Known for his distinctive voice and memorable performances, he gained fame through roles in classics, like The Italian Job (1969) and Get Carter (1971).

Caine’s career has remained strong throughout the years, with standout roles in movies like The Dark Knight trilogy (2005-12) and The Cider House Rules (1999), the latter of which earned him an Academy Award.

He continues to be respected as one of the most versatile actors of his generation.

Clint Eastwood – 94 years old

Clint Eastwood is an actor and director whose career began in the 1950s. He rose to fame as the star of Westerns, like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), and became an iconic action star with the Dirty Harry (1971-88) franchise. His characters almost always portrayed a tough, no-nonsense style.

As a director, Eastwood has earned acclaim for such films as Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), both of which won him Oscars.

Rita Moreno – 92 years old

Rita Moreno is a legendary, award-winning actress, singer and dancer who’s best known for her role as Anita in West Side Story (1961), which earned her an Oscar in 1962. With more talent in her pinky finger than most people have in their entire bodies, she has rightfully become one of the few performers to achieve EGOT status, winning an Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar and Tony.

After taking a break from Hollywood, Moreno continued her acting career, which has spanned over 70 years, making her a trailblazer for Latina representation in Hollywood. She continues to inspire audiences with her talent and resilience.

Berry Gordy, Jr. – 94 years old

Another non-traditional Hollywood star, but a celebrity nonetheless!

Berry Gordy, Jr. is the legendary founder of Motown Records, the label that launched the careers of Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. His vision shaped the sound of the 1960s and created a cultural movement.

William Shatner – 93 years old

Joan Collins – 91 years old

After a slow start in the world of acting, Joan Collins eventually rose to fame as the glamorous and scheming Alexis Carrington on the television show, Dynasty (1981-1989). Her role as the villainess brought her to new heights, as she reached international fame and earned numerous awards.

She also became well-known for her love of glitz and glamor, with many women aspiring to attain Collins’ style of beauty.

Collins’ career spans decades, with roles in films, TV and theater. Known for her elegance and strong presence, she continues to dazzle and has become a symbol of classic Hollywood glamor.

Tippi Hedren – 94 years old

Tippi Hedren is an actor and animal rights activist, best known for her leading role in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963). The film and her performance were well-received by audiences and critics, and the acclaim led her to star in other roles in films, like Marnie (1964).

Beyond acting, Hedren has dedicated much of her life to animal activism, founding the Shambala Preserve to protect big cats.

Mel Brooks – 98 years old

Brooks is also an EGOT winner, with Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar and Tony awards to his name. Unsurprisingly, his work continues to influence comedic writers and filmmakers to this day.

Willie Nelson – 91 years old

Not a Hollywood star, but an icon in the music industry, we had to include Willie Nelson. He’s a country music legend, known for his unique voice and songwriting, with hits like “On the Road Again” and “Always On My Mind.” Nelson’s had a profound impact on country and popular music, which continues to be felt in the industry today.

In addition to his music, Nelson is an advocate for various social causes, including support for farmers and environmental issues. His long-lasting career and laid-back persona have made him an American icon, as has his legendary look.

Shirley MacLaine – 90 years old
