Everyone is abuzz over Disney’s new Star Wars series, The Book of Boba Fett. One person, in particular, who’s excited is actor Patton Oswalt, who accurately predicted the series’ opening way back in 2013!
The revelation was made by Collider, which shared that Oswalt made the prediction while guest-starring on an episode of Parks of Recreation. In the season five episode, his character, Garth Blunden, talks about a dream scenario where Boba Fett escaped death after falling into the Sarlacc pit.
“We pan down from the twin suns of Tatooine,” his character says. “We are now close on the mouth of the Sarlacc pit. After a beat, the gloved Mandalorian armor gauntlet of Boba Fett grabs onto the sand outside the Sarlacc pit, and the feared bounty hunter pulls himself from the maw of the sand beast.”
What his character didn’t know at the time is that that’s how the first scene in the debut episode of The Book of Boba Fett would go down, with the bounty hunter cutting himself out of the Sarlacc and climbing out of the sand. Viewers also saw flashbacks of Boba Fett while he was inside the Sarlacc’s stomach, after his presumed-fatal fall at the end of Stars Wars: Return of the Jedi.
That’s not all. According to Oswalt, his character’s take on Boba Fett’s fate didn’t come from the writer’s room. In an interview with Observer in 2020, he revealed it was all him, saying:
“There was nothing in the script. All it was, was ‘Garth starts to begin to filibuster’ and they told me, ‘Just do whatever you want.’ They didn’t yell cut so I didn’t want to be unprofessional and stop, so the panic kind of locked in and I guess my response was to dump every bit of Star Wars and pop culture trivia I have in my brain.
That’s like my equivalent of a squid emitting ink, I guess.”
Following the premiere of the series on Disney+, Oswalt retweeted a comparison video by Lights, Camera, Pod, saying, “To say I’m touched is putting it lightly. And yeah, #BookofBobaFett ROCKS. YOU’RE WELCOME.”
