Party in the front, business in the back. That’s the age-old description of the iconic hairstyle known as the “mullet.” Decades ago, the mullet saw immense popularity, especially among some pretty famous people. Here are 12 people who once sported a mullet of their own. You can decide if they rocked it or not.
Billy Ray Cyrus
Kicking off the list is the one and only Billy Ray Cyrus. A country singer and songwriter, Billy Ray Cyrus rose to fame not only for his music, but for his looks. When most people think of the mullet hairstyle, they often think of this man right here. The buzz on the top with the long length at the back – it was mullet perfection. His mullet was so important to him, he even wrote a song about it!
John Stamos
Who could forget the funny and charming John Stamos, who iconically played Uncle Jesse in Full House? He was the ultimate cool guy and there was something so warm and comforting about Stamos in that role. Maybe it had something to do with the dark, luscious, wispy locks he wore. You just wanted to get lost in them.
David Bowie
Classic rock legend David Bowie was at the forefront of 1980s style. Everything he did set the fashion world in motion. So when he decided to cut his hair into a mullet, naturally, the rest of the world followed suit. Sporting all sorts of different colors, Bowie showed the versatility of the mullet, inspiring both men and women to adopt the hairstyle for themselves.
Dolly Parton
Speaking of women who adopted the look, Dolly Parton also dabbled with the mullet. Always a lover of big hair, Parton could tease the top of her mullet as high as she wanted. It makes sense that she would eventually test out the mullet for herself considering she is the godmother of Billy Ray’s daughter Miley Cyrus!
Brian Bosworth
The mullet had so much influence, it even infiltrated the world of sports. Former NFL football linebacker, Brian Bosworth, was well known for his aggressive mullet-mohawk hybrid. When Bosworth stepped away from playing football and entered the world of Hollywood, he brought the mullet with him. His rendition of the hairstyle can be seen in his debut film Stone Cold (1991).
Mario Lopez
Saved By The Bell was televised from 1989 to 1993 and throughout the series, Mario Lopez was A. C. Slater, the army kid jock with a curly mullet. There was enough gel in that mullet to make his hair look wet at all times, and the ladies could not get enough of it. Lopez eventually dropped the hairstyle, but kept the dimple.
Meryl Streep
Someone we forget once had a mullet is Meryl Streep. Streep has had no problem cutting her hair short, growing it out long, or dying it for whatever role she is cast in. It only makes sense that she would welcome a choppy mullet. Although she didn’t keep the look for long, Streep sports the hairstyle in the biographical drama titled Silkwood (1983).
Kurt Russell
Another person who made the mullet part of their brand was Kurt Russell. The hair at the top of his head always had so much volume, flowing into the long, wavy locks at the back. It has become a signature look for Russell, something that he has maintained into his older years. Even now at 71, Russell keeps a bit of length at the back that is reminiscent of his rocking 1980s mullet.
Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney helped make the mop-top a popular hairstyle during his time with The Beatles. Clearly, he was already influencing men everywhere before the mullet, so when he grew out the back and shortened the front, he really helped to popularize the look.
Florence Henderson
Florence Henderson is best known for her role as Carol Brady on The Brady Bunch, which aired from 1969 to 1974. During part of that time, she wore her hair in what can only be described as two styles in one. Her pixie cut on top was accompanied by a shoulder bob underneath. It was such a dramatic mullet that only Henderson could really pull it off.
George Clooney
When George Clooney landed one of his first major roles in the 1984 sitcom E/R (no, not that ER), he did so with a voluminous and curly mullet. Playing a ladies’ man called Ace, Clooney took the character beyond the screen, becoming a ladies’ man in real life. Clooney’s long dark mullet was truly iconic.
Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda had been acting for years before she switched up her hairstyle to sport a unique mullet. The bangs are giving Justin Bieber vibes, but the long hair at the back helps date the look to the 1970s. This was the haircut Fonda had for her booking shot when she spent a night in jail following an arrest. When her mugshot went viral, women everywhere were asking for the Klute cut.
