Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones got married in 2000 and have shared their lives for the past 23 years. However, when marriages go on for decades as theirs has, couples often need to find different ways to keep their relationship fresh. These two celebrities are no different. When they go to play golf together, as they often do, a little wager dictates whether Douglas exposes himself.
Zeta-Jones first explained their deal on a talk show
Back in 2016, Catherine Zeta-Jones made an appearance on The Graham Norton Show alongside Will Smith, Ryan Reynolds, and Toby Jones. During the interview, the discussion of marriage came up. All four celebrities on the panel had been happily married for several years. Norton began to ask each guest for advice on relationships, and Zeta-Jones had a unique contribution to make to the conversation.
She explained one way that she and hubby Michael Douglas keep the spice in their marriage. They both love to play golf and have come up with a very unusual deal. When they play together, if Douglas is unable to get his ball past the ladies’ tees, he has to expose himself in some way – typically by dropping his pants for his wife.
What if the paparazzi see him with his pants down?
Zeta-Jones went on to say, “But it’s not just my husband it’s any man that I play with.” This, of course, received a wave of laughter from the audience. Earlier in the discussion, she admitted that she was really good at the sport and when playing against Douglas, she can often “kick his [expletive] in golf.” If that’s the case, Zeta-Jones may be catching peeks of men’s privates more than we think.
Reynolds then chimed in to ask about the paparazzi. Surely, with two celebrities as famous as Zeta-Jones and Douglas, there have to be some photographers hanging around the golf course and hoping to snatch some pictures. She agreed that paparazzi have been an issue during their games of golf in the past. In this situation, when Douglas fails to hit his ball far enough he has to climb into the bushes to drop his pants with some privacy.
Douglas confirmed that a deal is a deal
Douglas indicated in 2023 that what his wife said on the late-night television show was true. During a fan Q&A interview he participated in with The Guardian, a fan asked him to confirm or deny what Zeta-Jones had said. Michael Douglas explained that yes, he does, in fact, have to flash his wife when he loses.
“The rules are I have to whip it out if I don’t hit it past the ladies’ tees, which I manage most of the time,” Douglas explained. Despite how good Douglas may be at golf, there have been instances where he’s come up short. “But there have been times when we’re playing alone, and have to give her a little show because we are competitive,” he continued.

To make it clear that this isn’t a practice he participates in with everyone, he concluded by saying, “But only when I play with my wife.”
