While we may have seen the last of Indiana Jones, there seems to be much more Mission: Impossible coming in the future. Leading man Tom Cruise revealed that he intends to stay with the franchise for many more years to come, admiring the legendary work of Harrison Ford all the way into his 80s.
Cruise has done many ‘Mission: Impossible’ films
The Mission: Impossible franchise began back in 1996 and has gone on to see Cruise return to the role six more times. He was 33 when the first film was released, and the latest installment, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One arrives after his 61st birthday in 2023.
It is no surprise that Cruise loves playing the part of Ethan Hunt, a senior agent for a fictional espionage agency that performs “impossible” missions. The next installment, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, is already slated for release in June 2024.
Cruise wants to be like Harrison Ford
While attending the red carpet event for the newest Mission: Impossible film in Australia, Cruise spoke with the Sydney Morning Herald. He admitted that he hopes to keep playing Ethan Hunt until he reaches Harrison Ford’s age.
The final film of the Indiana Jones franchise was just released in the summer of 2023, with Ford retiring the character at the age of 80. Cruise said, “Harrison Ford is a legend; I hope to be still going. I’ve got 20 years to catch up with him. I hope to keep making ‘Mission: Impossible’ films until I’m his age.”
While the Indiana Jones franchise only had five films in total, it seems the Mission: Impossible series will far surpass that if Cruise is open to committing 20 more years to the role.
Cruise weighed in on the ‘Barbenheimer’ summer releases
Cruise also weighed in on the upcoming Barbie and Oppenheimer movies that have been identified as tentpole films for the summer of 2023. A recent photo of Cruise holding up movie tickets to both films has gone viral, and he said he fully intends of seeing both on their opening weekend.
“I grew up seeing movies on the big screen,” Cruise said. “That’s how I make them, and I like that experience; it’s immersive, and to have that as a community and an industry, it’s important. I still go [to] the movies.” He said he wants to see both films, not one over the other, and will likely see Oppenheimer on Friday and Barbie on Saturday.
