The U.S. Congress Establishes the Phrase “In God We Trust” On All U.S. Coins

Amid the tumultuous backdrop of the American Civil War, the U.S. Congress made a historic decision in 1864: to inscribe the phrase “In God We Trust” onto American coins. Spearheaded by Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase, this initiative wasn’t merely about currency; it was a declaration of faith and unity during one of the nation’s darkest chapters. Chase fervently believed that acknowledging a higher power on coins would instill a sense of patriotism and virtue among citizens, serving as a beacon of hope amid the chaos of war.

However, the inclusion of “In God We Trust” on coins sparked heated debates over the separation of church and state. Critics argued that it violated the principles of secular government, and the issue eventually reached the Supreme Court. Despite legal challenges, the Court upheld the motto, viewing it as a secular and patriotic expression rather than a religious endorsement. This decision solidified the presence of “In God We Trust” on U.S. currency and affirmed its significance as a symbol of national identity.

As time passed, “In God We Trust” evolved beyond its initial inscription on coins. In 1956, it was formally adopted as the national motto of the United States, cementing its place in American history. Over the years, variations of the motto, such as “God Our Trust” and “In God We Hope,” have appeared on coins, reflecting shifts in American culture and beliefs. Despite these variations, the core message of faith and allegiance remains unchanged, serving as a reminder of the enduring values that unite the American people.
