Martin Scorsese Wants Leonardo DiCaprio to Play Frank Sinatra

Samantha Franco

In the age of biopics, it feels like one is certainly missing from the group. Frank Sinatra was and still is a household name. The man became a legend in the music industry, and his life was just as exciting as you could imagine it to be. Equally legendary is the person who is slotted to direct the film, Martin Scorsese, who has a good idea of who he would like to see play the lead role.

Martin Scorsese has a career that has spanned over six decades. He has created some of the best films in Hollywood, including films like Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), and more recently, The Irishman (2019). Now, he is setting his sights on a new film opportunity focused on the one and only Frank Sinatra. Once he has wrapped up his work on his current project, he wants to turn his attention to filming a biopic about Sinatra, and he has the perfect person in mind to play Ol’ Blue Eyes himself: Leonardo DiCaprio.

Sinatra was married four times in his life, and the biopic intends to focus on one of those marriages. Particularly, it will involve his relationship with Ava Gardner, whom he was married to between 1951 and 1957. For her likeness, Scorsese also has a good idea of who he’d like for that role: Jennifer Lawrence. Scorsese recently worked with the two of them on his 2021 film Don’t Look Up, and he must have enjoyed it enough to want to see them cast side-by-side again in this new biopic.

As of now, this is all up for speculation, as Sinatra’s daughter, Tina, has control over her father’s estate and has yet to approve the project. Sinatra, who was born in 1915, lived until the age of 82. He lived a full and colorful life in the entertainment business, singing, dancing, and acting on stage and on screen until he died from a heart attack in 1998.

It is still unclear if Tina will give her blessing on the film’s production, as it covers a pretty touchy subject for her. The film will largely cover the period in Sinatra’s life when his affair with Gardner actually broke up his marriage to Nancy Barbato, Tina’s mother. We’re not surprised that she might be apprehensive about letting the film carry out.

As previously mentioned, this would not be the first time Scorsese and DiCaprio would be working together on a project. In fact, the pair share a long history of working together on films going as far back as 2002 with Gangs of New York. Other films include Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and, most recently, Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).

Considering his impressive versatility as an actor and his commitment to his craft, we’re sure DiCaprio would do the role of Sinatra some serious justice.
