Celebrity friends are common. We often see actors hanging out with actors, singers hanging out with singers, and so on, so it comes as little shock that two musical legends in their own respects, Jon Bon Jovi and Paul McCartney, share a strong bond. However, for the former, this friendship is still a bit surreal.

Jon Bon Jovi sat down with AARP the Magazine to reflect on his friendship with Paul McCartney. While it may seem unsurprising that these two music icons are friends, Bon Jovi is still amazed that he gets to call the former Beatle a friend. Showing a picture of the two eating lunch at his home in East Hampton, New York, Bon Jovi explained, “We do this all summer.”

“I’m sitting there with a [expletive] Beatle,” he exclaimed. “He comes to my house often, I go to his beach house often, and our wives are very close.” One of the things that Bon Jovi appreciates most about McCartney is his continued passion for pursuing fresh projects even after his more than six-decade career. “‘Oh, I’ve got new stuff!’ he tells me. At 81. Crazy,” Bon Jovi said.

While Bon Jovi and McCartney share a friendship in their personal lives, they have also been seen to grace the stage together in the past. In early 2024, the duo took to the stage at the “Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffet” concert that honored the late singer-songwriter following his death at 76 back in September 2023.

Additionally, Bon Jovi joined McCartney on stage alongside Bruce Springsteen to celebrate the Beatles’ birthday. On the final tour date of McCartney’s “Got Back Tour,” Bon Jovi presented him with balloons as he sang him “Happy Birthday” in front of the crowd. Then, the trio all returned to the stage to sing the Beatles song “The End,” featured on the album Abbey Road. These are only a few examples of the pair performing together.

For 2024, Bon Jovi was chosen as the recipient of the MusiCares Person of the Year Award. The MusiCare Award is given annually to artists who showcase artistic achievement in the music industry and a dedication to philanthropy. During his acceptance speech at the tribute event, Bon Jovi took the time to thank his friend who was in attendance.

“I have to give a shout-out to a past recipient of this award, Sir Paul McCartney, but I think it’s fair to say that the reason most, if not all of us, are in this room tonight, it’s because of you, so thank you very much for being beautiful,” he said. McCartney received the MusiCares Person of the Year Award back in 2012.
