Princess Victoria ascends the British throne
On June 20, 1837, the young Princess Victoria became the Queen of the United Kingdom. She was only 18 years old when she received the news while staying at Kensington Palace, and marked the beginning of one of the most remarkable reigns in British history. King William IV, Victoria’s uncle, had been the reigning monarch until he passed away that day at the age of 71.
