In an interview, Nicolas Cage discussed his thoughts about stepping back from acting, mentioning he was “starting to cement” his retirement plans. At that time, he told Vanity Fair, “I may have three or four more movies left in me.” Reflecting on his extensive career, Cage expressed, “I do feel I’ve said what I’ve had to say with cinema. I think I took film performance as far as I could.”
This statement hinted at a possible end to the prolific and often eccentric career of the actor known for his intense and unique performances. Cage’s contemplation about retirement suggested a desire to conclude his cinematic journey on a high note, maintaining the integrity and impact of his work.
He made an important amendment to his previous plans
However, in a more recent interview with The New Yorker, Cage provided further clarity on his retirement timeline. When asked to elaborate on his earlier statements, Cage explained, “Well, I did two or three very supporting roles. So maybe three or four more lead roles. Maybe that’s more of what I was saying.”
Cage also reflected on the potential risks of continuing his career without clear boundaries, noting, “It would have been a slippery slope. I think it could have lapsed into something almost too ridiculous. You don’t want to see that the shark is made of rubber, you know? You want the shark to be terrifying and keep it under the water for a lot of it.”
Of all his work, there’s one film he’d recommend first
If you have never seen a Nicolas Cage film, he has one he recommends starting with. Cage’s choice would be Pig, a drama directed and written by Michael Sarnoski which he starred in in 2021. In this film, Cage plays the role of a reclusive truffle hunter living in Oregon who must return to Portland to search for his kidnapped foraging pig.

Describing the movie, Cage said, “It’s something that I think people can get something out of, because tragedy is going to hit all of us at some point. It’s just a matter of when.” He added, “It’s also a movie that to me is like a folk song. It’s a very quiet, gentle movie, which is the opposite of what we started our conversation with—people thinking I’m crazy.”
