David Duchovny’s journey to stardom is a testament to perseverance in the face of rejection. Before becoming a household name with The X-Files, Duchovny experienced numerous setbacks, including several unsuccessful auditions. One set of rejection came from his attempt to land one of the three male leads in the television sitcom Full House.

David Duchovny, known for his iconic role as Fox Mulder on The X-Files, experienced a considerable amount of rejection before finding his breakthrough. During an episode of his Fail Better podcast, Duchovny revealed a particularly memorable near-miss: auditioning for the popular sitcom Full House.

Duchovny tried out for all three major male roles: Danny Tanner (played by Bob Saget), Jesse Katsopolis (played by John Stamos), and Joey Gladstone (played by Dave Coulier). “At first, they had me for, I think, the dad,” he recalled. “And then, they had me for the Stamos character. And then, they had me for the other guy. I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to get one of these, and it’s going to change my life.'” Despite his hopes, he didn’t land a single one.

This string of rejections could have been discouraging, but Duchovny remained undeterred. His determination to carve out a name for himself in Hollywood drove him to keep auditioning. “I had plenty of those pilots that I went up for when I was first out in L.A., and I thought each one was going to be the break,” he shared. “I just needed to be able to pay my rent, too. That was an important thing because I just wanted a job.”

Reflecting on his earlier experiences, Duchovny admitted that he wasn’t right for the roles he had been trying out for, including those on Full House. “I was really bad at that kind of stuff,” he explained. “I did not know how to do that sitcom stuff. I don’t know what they were thinking, that they thought I was going to exist in that world. I mean, I guess I could have learned, but I wasn’t ready for that kind of energetic performance that they need.”

It wasn’t until 1993 that Duchovny finally found his breakthrough role in The X-Files, portraying FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder. The show ran for nine successful seasons until 2002 and later returned for a reboot from 2016 to 2018, solidifying Duchovny’s place in television history. The series catapulted him to fame and even earned an Emmy for his work.

His journey from countless rejections to a starring role in a cult classic series highlights the resilience and perseverance needed to succeed in Hollywood. Duchovny’s numerous failures, he shared, ultimately fueled his success and led to the creation of his podcast, aptly named Fail Better. “It’s not about reveling in the shame of it all,” Duchovny said about his podcast. “It’s about the true hurt of it and the response after the hurt. How do you go ahead in your life stronger and not debilitated by the wound of a big failure?”
