Brian May of Queen is born

On July 19, 1947, Brian Harold May was born in Hampton, Middlesex, England, and would go on to become the legendary guitarist for the rock band Queen. His parents, Harold May and Ruth Irving Fletcher, supported his interests from an early age, encouraging both his academic pursuits and his love for music.

Brian excelled in school, particularly in mathematics and science, attending Hampton Grammar School. However, it was his passion for music that really stood out. As a teenager, he played in several bands, the most notable being on named Smile. In 1970, Smile evolved into Queen with the addition of Freddie Mercury and John Deacon, and this new band quickly made a name for itself in the world of rock music.

Queen became famous in the 1970s and 1980s with their unique sound, combining rock, opera, and theatrical elements. They produced timeless hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You,” and “Somebody to Love.” Brian May’s distinctive guitar playing, particularly with his self-made “Red Special” guitar, became a key part of the band’s signature sound.

Brian May’s talents extend beyond music. He earned a Ph.D. in astrophysics in 2007 and has published several scientific papers. He is also known for his activism in animal rights and environmental issues. His diverse achievements highlight his commitment to making a positive impact in multiple areas. Additionally, he was knighted by King Charles III in 2023.
