The late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek is born

On July 22, 1940, Alex Trebek was born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. This date marks the beginning of the life of one of the most beloved TV game show hosts ever.

Alex Trebek grew up in a family with a Ukrainian father and a French-Canadian mother. He attended Jesuit schools and later went to the University of Ottawa, where he earned a degree in philosophy in 1961. During his time at university, Trebek got involved in student radio, sparking his interest in broadcasting.

Trebek started his career in 1961 at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). He worked as a newscaster and sportscaster and later hosted music programs and game shows. In the early 1970s, he moved to the United States to further his career, hosting shows like The Wizard of Odds, High Rollers, and Double Dare.

In 1984, Trebek became the host of Jeopardy!, a game show created by Merv Griffin. His calm demeanor and quick wit made him a favorite among viewers. Trebek hosted Jeopardy! for 36 years, winning many awards, including six Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host. He set a record for hosting the most episodes of a single game show, surpassing Bob Barker of The Price Is Right.

Trebek was not only a TV host but also a philanthropist. He supported various causes, including World Vision Canada, and donated significantly to the University of Ottawa. In 1998, he became a naturalized American citizen, strengthening his connection to the United States.

In March 2019, Trebek announced that he had stage IV pancreatic cancer. Despite his illness, he continued to host Jeopardy! until shortly before his death. Trebek passed away on November 8, 2020, at the age of 80. His dedication to Jeopardy! and his ability to connect with audiences worldwide made him an iconic figure in TV history. Trebek’s legacy continues to inspire and entertain, leaving a lasting impact on television and popular culture.
