On July 28, 1929, Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, who would later become known to the world as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, was born in Southampton, New York. Jackie, as she was affectionately called, would grow up to become one of the most iconic and influential First Ladies in American history, known for her elegance, intelligence, and dedication to the arts.
Jackie was born into a wealthy and socially prominent family. Her father, John Vernou Bouvier III, was a successful Wall Street stockbroker, and her mother, Janet Norton Lee, was an accomplished equestrienne. Jackie enjoyed a privileged upbringing, which included attending the finest schools. She studied at the Holton-Arms School in Washington, D.C., Miss Porter’s School in Connecticut, Vassar College, and spent a year in Paris at the Sorbonne. She eventually graduated from George Washington University with a degree in French literature.
In 1953, Jackie married John F. Kennedy, a charismatic senator from Massachusetts. Their wedding was a grand social event, setting the stage for her future role as First Lady. When Kennedy became president in 1961, Jackie brought a new level of style and cultural sophistication to the White House. She spearheaded a major renovation and preservation project of the historic residence, and her televised tour of the White House captivated the nation. Her commitment to the arts and historical preservation left a lasting impact on American culture.
After the tragic assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, Jackie focused on raising their two children, Caroline and John Jr. In 1968, she married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, which allowed her a measure of privacy and financial security. Despite this controversial second marriage, Jackie remained a figure of public fascination and respect.
