Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles Marry

On September 7, 1943, Hollywood stars Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles tied the knot in a private civil ceremony in Santa Monica, California. At the time, Hayworth was one of the most glamorous actresses in Hollywood, known for her roles in films like Cover Girl (1944) and Gilda (1946). Orson Welles was celebrated as a genius filmmaker, having made a splash with his groundbreaking film Citizen Kane just two years earlier. Their marriage combined the allure of Hollywood royalty, drawing the attention of fans and media alike.

Hayworth and Welles met in 1941 and were instantly drawn to each other despite their differences. Hayworth, whose real name was Margarita Carmen Cansino, was reserved and sought stability, while Welles was charismatic, unpredictable, and deeply involved in his creative pursuits. These contrasting personalities initially sparked a passionate romance, with the couple often seen as a glamorous pairing of brains and beauty during the peak of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Their wedding was a quiet affair, attended by only a few close friends, which was quite unusual for two of the biggest names in show business. However, from the start, their marriage faced difficulties. Welles was often away, deeply absorbed in his work and prone to bouts of restlessness. This, combined with reports of infidelities and conflicting lifestyles, put a strain on their relationship. By 1947, Hayworth filed for divorce, citing extreme mental cruelty. Despite the separation, they had one daughter together, Rebecca Welles, who was born in 1944.

The divorce marked the end of their high-profile union, but both Hayworth and Welles spoke with respect about each other in later years. Hayworth once described Welles as the great love of her life, despite the challenges they faced. Welles, too, expressed admiration for Hayworth, acknowledging that their relationship was marked by the pressures of fame and the complexities of their personal lives.
