The Tragic Death of Grace Kelly
On September 14, 1982, the world lost Grace Kelly, a beloved Hollywood actress and the Princess of Monaco, after a tragic car accident. Known for her elegance and beauty, Grace Kelly was a celebrated film star before she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956, becoming a real-life princess. Her sudden death at the age of 52 shocked the world, leaving a lasting sense of loss in both Hollywood and European royalty.
The accident occurred on the morning of September 13, 1982, as Kelly was driving from her country home in the French Alps to Monaco with her daughter, Princess Stéphanie. While navigating a steep and winding road in the Côte d’Azur region, Kelly lost control of her car, which plunged 120-feet down a mountainside. Kelly’s daughter, Caroline, explained how, “Stephanie told me, ‘Mommy kept saying, I can’t stop. The brakes don’t work. I can’t stop.’ She said that Mommy was in a complete panic.”
At the hospital, doctors found that Kelly had suffered multiple fractures and serious head injuries, putting her in critical condition. Despite their best efforts, her injuries were too severe. After consulting with her family, the decision was made to remove her from life support, and she passed away on September 14, 1982. Princess Stéphanie, who was also injured in the crash, miraculously survived the accident.
The news of Kelly’s death led to an outpouring of grief around the world. A requiem mass was held on September 18, 1982, at the Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Monaco, with the funeral attended by over 400 guests, including European royalty and stars from Hollywood. Kelly was laid to rest in the Grimaldi family vault, where she remains a cherished figure in Monaco’s history.
