Some may remember Kevin Gwin, DJ Tanner’s first boyfriend on the sitcom Full House (1987-95). Scott Curtis, who portrayed Gwin, recently sat down with two of the show’s alumni, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber, on their How Rude, Tanneritos! podcast, where he discussed a significant moment in relation to his appearance in the series: in the episode titled “13 Candles,” the two tweens share their first kiss at DJ’s birthday – Candace Cameron Bure’s first kiss in real life!

It was Andrea Barber who explained how this wasn’t just the character’s first kiss, but her co-star’s first, as well. She then asked Scott Curtis, “Was this your first kiss in real life?” Unsure, he explained how he may have had one prior, “But we’ll say it was. It was close enough to be.”

Curtis earned the role on Full House after multiple appearances on Growing Pains (1985-92), another show that starred Candace Cameron Bure‘s real-life brother, Kirk Cameron.

“I was, you know, excited to get the audition, and they had said that I was gonna be Candace’s first kiss,” Scott told Barber and Jodie Sweetin. “So, when I came in and did the table read with you guys first thing, like, I took this seriously. You know, I knew that this was – that this was a big moment.”

They broke the ice in their own unique way before the kiss

With the knowledge of the first kiss, the two had to get familiar with one another before filming. “It was pretty great between Candace and I right off the bat,” Scott Curtis told his former co-stars. “There was an exciting week leading up to the infamous kiss.”

To help with nerves, the two “broke the ice” by spraying Binaca breath freshener into each other’s mouths.

“And, you know, of course, the rest of the week, you could feel the build-up happening,” Scott recalled. “The night that we filmed it, we actually had to get it with audience and then without audience, because [showrunner] Jeff Franklin wanted one take of the audience going, ‘Wooooooh.'”

Curtis only appeared as Kevin Gwin for two episodes and, by the second, he said he and Candace Cameron Bure were pretty good friends. “We were talking on the phone and giggling and laughing and having fun,” he stated. “And I remember the last thing that she and I said to each other was, ‘We’ll see you at the wrap party.'”

While the wrap party was meant to be a time to celebrate the work on the sitcom, it became a bit of a stressful situation for Scott Curtis.

“We all get tuxed-up and we get limoed over, and I walked in and I saw her and I choked,” he said. “I literally froze, and I could not go over there and even say hi to her, which I – I haven’t choked like that ever, before or since. So, I have no idea what hit me, but I just went, ‘Oh my God!'”

Curtis explained how that was the kind of reaction his character would have had, being the shy, quiet type. He never expected to react that way, which Andrea Barber noted was “so funny because you’d already kissed her at that point on the show.”

Curtis responded, saying, “It totally should not have been, you know, a big deal. But, for whatever reason, I just went, ‘Oh, boy.'”

Curtis revealed he hadn’t spoken to Candace Cameron Bure since that night, meaning the pair haven’t talked in around 25 years. However, Barber and Jodie Sweetin both reassured him there’s no ill will on her end. They said that she actually remembers him fondly, it was just the mortification of having her first kiss on television that she feels strange about.

“The embarrassment comes from just that milestone [happening] so publicly,” Barber explained.
