Rob Lowe may be best known nowadays for starring in the popular television series 9-1-1: Lone Star (2020-24), but back in the 1980s, he was a prominent face on the big-screen, thanks to his association with the “Brat Pack.” These young actors dominated the entertainment industry for the better part of a decade and went on to have lengthy careers.
As Lowe explained in a recent appearance on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, there were hook ups within the group, including between him and Demi Moore.
Two of the most popular actors of the 1980s
Rob Lowe and Demi Moore were arguably two of the most popular actors of the 1980s. Part of the Brat Pack, along with Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy, they starred in two big-name movies from the era, St. Elmo’s Fire (1985) and About Last Night… (1986).
Moore, Lowe and the rest of the Brat Pack made some of the most iconic coming-of-age films to ever grace the big screen. Along with the two aforementioned productions, members of the group also appeared in The Breakfast Club (1985), Sixteen Candles (1984), Pretty in Pink (1986) and The Outsiders (1983), among other notable features.
Rob Lowe and Demi Moore ‘briefly had a thing’
While having Rob Lowe on as a guest on her podcast, Kelly Ripa was able to pull out details of his relationship with Demi Moore by commenting on the “crazy good chemistry” they had, particularly on-screen. She asked the actor if he ever had a crush on his fellow Brat Pack member and went so far as to ask if they’d ever dated.
“I mean, Demi and I briefly – I’m not telling tales out of school – we briefly had a thing,” he responded, adding, “Look, anytime you put young 20-something men and women together, hookups are inevitable.”
Lowe was quick to point out that his and Moore’s relationship occurred before she became engaged to Emilio Estevez. She and Estevez had been dating for half a year when they announced their engagement, with it ending after it came to light the former had cheated on his wife-to-be.
Writing in her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Moore revealed “Emilio and I had in fact just mailed out the invitations for our wedding when a friend told me she had seen him out with someone else in L.A. He denied it, of course, but I was having a hard time trusting him: during a two-week breakup a few months before, he’d slept with an ‘ex’ girlfriend, lied about it and then been forced to tell me the truth when he found out she was pregnant.”
Trying to make a St. Elmo’s Fire (1985) sequel a reality
In an August 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Robe Lowe let slip that the sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire was in the “very, very, very, very, very early stages,” saying at the time that he and the movie studio had been in talks. As he stated to Kelly Ripa, progress, while slow, has been made, with Demi Moore also now involved in the project.
“We’re very much in contact now because we are actively trying to do [the] St. Elmo’s Fire sequel,” he shared. “It’s going a little more slowly than I would have liked, but that’s a good thing because we’re trying to find the right writer and the right story. But all of the actors, everybody is on board. Everybody is excited.”
As for what the sequel could possibly be about, the actor put forth a bunch of possible directions.
“I think now, the theme of St. Elmo’s Fire today is that it’s never too late for happiness,” he stated. “Our kids are out of school and maybe some of us have been divorced and maybe somebody had been falling ill – all the things that you deal with as you get to our ages. This is an opportunity to explore those themes with characters that people know and love.
“And I think as opposed to just a money run, let’s just reboot it because people know the title of it,” he continued. “I actually think there’s a lot to be said about why we’re doing it. And I’m super excited about it. Hopefully we can pull it off.”
