On this day in 1532, King Henry VIII of England secretly married Anne Boleyn, the woman who would change England’s history forever. At this point, Henry had been struggling for years to end his marriage to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, who had not given him a male heir. Henry’s strong desire for a son—and his attraction to Anne Boleyn—had led him to try everything to secure a divorce from Catherine, but Pope Clement VII refused to grant it. This issue, known as the “King’s Great Matter,” was a turning point in English history.

By 1532, Anne Boleyn had become Henry’s closest companion and advisor, encouraging him to break from the Catholic Church if necessary. Their relationship faced strong public scrutiny, and they likely married in secret to avoid scandal. This clandestine wedding on November 14 came soon after a successful diplomatic meeting with King Francis I of France, which likely gave Henry the confidence to push forward with his plan. The secrecy may also have been practical—Anne was rumored to be pregnant not long after, making it urgent for Henry to make their marriage official.

Two months later, on January 25, 1533, Henry and Anne held a formal, public wedding to solidify her position as queen and to prepare for the birth of their child. This move forced Henry to go against the Pope’s authority, and soon he declared himself head of the new Church of England, which gave him the power to annul his marriage to Catherine and formally recognize his marriage to Anne. By breaking from Rome, Henry set England on a path toward religious reform that would transform the nation.

Anne’s influence was powerful but short-lived. As queen, she inspired Henry to introduce Protestant ideas into England and supported religious reforms. However, she struggled to give him the son he so desperately wanted. In 1536, just three years after their official wedding, Anne was charged with adultery, incest, and treason, leading to her execution. Her fall from power was as dramatic as her rise, but her impact on England was undeniable.
