On November 29, 1981, the world was shocked by the tragic and mysterious death of Hollywood actress Natalie Wood. Wood, who was known for her roles in classic films like West Side Story (1961) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955), was found dead off the coast of California under strange circumstances. She had been spending the weekend on a yacht with her husband, actor Robert Wagner, her co-star Christopher Walken, and the yacht’s captain, Dennis Davern.
The events leading up to her death have been shrouded in mystery. That evening, the group had dinner at a restaurant on Santa Catalina Island, where tensions reportedly ran high. A heated argument between Wagner and Walken about Wood’s career seemed to escalate the mood. Later, on the yacht, Natalie Wood disappeared. After a search was launched, her body was discovered floating in the water, wearing a nightgown and a jacket, about a mile away from the yacht.
The initial investigation ruled her death as an accidental drowning, with the coroner suggesting she may have fallen into the water while trying to board an inflatable dinghy. However, inconsistencies in the accounts of those on board raised doubts about the circumstances. In the years that followed, questions remained unanswered, leading to a 2011 reopening of the case. In 2012, the cause of death was revised to “drowning and other undetermined factors,” leaving many to wonder what truly happened on that fateful night.
