Goldie Hawn, 79, and Kurt Russell, 73, share a truly beautiful love story – one that dates back many decades. They combined their families, with the latter welcoming the former’s children, Oliver and Kate Hudson, as his own. At one point, he even extended the idea of adoption to them, but they ended up declining the offer.
Now, Oliver Hudson is explaining why.
Blended Russell-Hawn family
Goldie Hawn was married to Bill Hudson from 1976-82, with their union bearing two children, Oliver and Kate. Hawn then began a relationship with Kurt Russell a year later. Russell himself had a son, Boston, with ex-wife Season Hubley.
Despite Hawn and Russell never getting married, they share one child together, Wyatt Russell, making theirs a large, blended family. The pair have been together for decades and have explained on numerous occasions why they never bothered to tie the knot.
In a 2020 interview with PEOPLE, Russell explained, “For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have. I don’t know. 40 years isn’t enough to finally say, ‘Well I guess…'”
Oliver and Kate Hudson’s relationship with their biological father
Oliver and Kate Hudson have been pretty open about their relationship with their biological father. At times, things have been strained, as the former explained on their joint podcast, Sibling Revelry.
Talking about life with adoptive parents versus biological parents, Oliver said, “I only say this because my dad – he was around for a little bit, then he bailed. We have a good relationship now, but it took a long, long, long, long time, but we’re there.” He went on to discuss Kurt Russell, sharing, “Kurt came into my life when I was six, five or six and essentially he raised me. I’m the man I am today because of him, right?”
Saying ‘no’ to Kurt Russell’s offer
Kurt Russell accepted Goldie Hawn’s children as his own, and he even asked the siblings if they wanted him to adopt them. Their response is not what we expected, given the family’s overall closeness. “There was a moment when he asked us, myself and Kate, if we wanted to be adopted, and we said no,” Oliver Hudson revealed.
While this may seem like a harsh response, there was actually a good reason for their rejection of the proposal. “Not that we were – you know, very aware of probably what it even f*****g meant,” Oliver stated. “We were six and 12 or however, I don’t remember the age, but we just said, ‘Well, we don’t need it. The love is right there.'”

Oliver also explained that their love for Russell is different to their love for their biological father. “At the same time, when you don’t have your biological [parent] around, it’s hard to replace that, no matter what,” he shared. “The love was there with Kurt, there’s no doubt that he is my dad. I call him Pa. But there was always – not something missing, but there’s that other side.”
